A potassium-rich diet blunts the harmful effects of sodium

By: Meg Dilts

We all know that limiting the amount of sodium in our diet helps with lowering blood pressure. But many people might not know that a potassium-rich diet blunts the harmful effects of sodium on blood pressure. We need to eat foods rich in potassium. You should try to eat 4700 mg of potassium a day. Of course you can get them from vitamins. But the best way to consume is through food. Foods rich in potassium include fruits and vegetables, especially:

  • tomatoes and tomato products
  • orange juice and grapefruit juice
  • raisins, dates, prunes
  • white potatoes and sweet potatoes
  • lettuce
  • papayas

These are all common consumed foods, so it's not as hard as you think to get enough potassium each day.
